My Best Book Design

Other than my daughter Heather, my best design project so far has to be Light Fading – Reflections on the Emperiled Everglades by photographer Joel Curzon. It won three First Place Gold Medal Awards at the Benjamin Franklin Awards ceremony in May, 2011 at New York’s Jacob Javits Convention Center. These were awarded in the categories of Nature/Environment,  Coffee Table Books, and Arts (Art/Music/Photography). The IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for excellence in book publishing is regarded as one of the highest national honors for small and independent publishers.

Mark Heliger designed this book for photographer Joel M. Curzon after Joel’s six-year trek into the Everglades brought forth thousands of images from which to choose. The organization of the book correlates to the “regions” or environmental aspects of the Everglades from the north to the south. Joel Curzon was very exacting with every detail of the production and the results were outstanding. Mark put his heart into this project to create a “Rhythm of Nature” imbued in the spreads. It seems to have paid off!
